The opening day of the 2026 IBSA Judo Grand Prix Astana featured a celebratory opening ceremony at the Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov Wrestling Palace in Kazakhstan’s capital, marking the official start of one of the most important events on the IBSA Judo calendar.

Proceedings were formally opened by Chairman of the Committee for Sports and Physical Culture of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr Ruslan Bakytuly Yessenalin.

“Dear sports fans and honoured guests, I am delighted to welcome you to Astana. It is my great pleasure to congratulate everyone on the official opening of the 2026 IBSA Judo Grand Prix Astana,” he said.

Mr Yessenalin highlighted the continued development of judo in Kazakhstan and the achievements of the nation’s athletes on the international stage.

“Judo continues to grow dynamically in Kazakhstan. Our athletes have proudly represented the country under the blue flag at numerous international competitions. At the 2024 Paralympic Games in France, Kazakhstan’s determined and talented judoka earned one gold, one silver and three bronze medals. These remarkable accomplishments have inspired countless people throughout our country.

“Kazakhstan has also become a regular host of major Para-judo competitions. The tournament we are opening today is further evidence of that progress. More than 140 athletes from 24 countries have gathered here to compete, and I would like to extend a warm welcome to every delegation that has travelled from near and far.

“To all competitors, I wish you the very best of luck. May you provide spectators with exciting and memorable contests throughout the competition.”

In response, IBSA Chief Executive Officer Mr Rufat Hajili addressed the audience and welcomed participants on behalf of the organisation.

“Dear athletes, coaches and members of the IBSA Judo community, it is a pleasure to see you all gathered here once again in Astana, Kazakhstan, for what has become a well-established and highly successful competition series.

“On behalf of IBSA, I would like to extend a warm welcome to every athlete, official, guest and delegation. Your participation reflects the unity, friendship and shared values that define our global judo family.”

Mr Hajili also drew attention to an important milestone in the history of the organisation.

“This year marks the 45th anniversary of IBSA. Reaching such a significant milestone would not have been possible without your dedication, commitment and continued support. Together, you have contributed to the growth and strengthening of our movement, creating opportunities and inspiration for athletes around the world.

“We wish all competitors success, unforgettable experiences and an outstanding championship. Welcome to Astana and thank you for being an essential part of the IBSA family.”

The President of the event’s title sponsor, the Zhanykulov Foundation, Mr Zhumabek Zhanykulov, also addressed those in attendance, speaking passionately about the foundation’s ongoing support for Para-judo.

“Dear guests, representatives of IBSA, athletes, coaches and friends, it is a tremendous honour to welcome you to the opening ceremony of the IBSA Judo Grand Prix Astana 2026 here in the capital of Kazakhstan.

“Over the years, Astana has become an important part of the international IBSA Judo community. We are proud that Kazakhstan continues to host major international Para-judo events and plays an active role in the development of this remarkable sport.”

Mr Zhanykulov emphasised both the international character of the event and the significance of the athletes participating.

“Today, more than 140 athletes from 24 countries have come together in this arena. They are more than competitors. They represent courage, determination, equal opportunity and the very best of the human spirit.

“It is also important to recognise the tremendous journey Kazakhstan has made in the development of Para-judo. What began with a small number of athletes training under modest circumstances has evolved into a programme capable of hosting world championships, Asian championships and IBSA Grand Prix tournaments to the highest international standards.”

Reflecting on the foundation’s contribution to Paralympic sport, he added:

“It is a privilege for me to support the continued growth of Paralympic sport. In 2025, we successfully worked together to host both the Para-Judo World Championships and the Asian Championships. It is deeply rewarding to see this sport continue to develop, bringing people together and inspiring future generations of athletes.”

Concluding his address, Mr Zhanykulov expressed appreciation to everyone involved in delivering the event.

“I would like to sincerely thank the International Blind Sports Association, the International Judo Federation, the organising committee, volunteers, coaches, partners and all those who helped make this tournament possible.

“To the athletes, I wish you fair competition, excellent health, memorable victories and unforgettable experiences during your time in Astana. Welcome to Kazakhstan, and may the best competitors succeed.”
