Kazakhstan Strengthens Link Between Judo and Higher Education

The International Judo Federation (IJF) has announced the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding designed to further develop judo within the higher education system of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The agreement brings together three key partners who share a common vision for youth development: the International Judo Federation, the Ministry for Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Jenys International Sports Foundation. This cooperation represents an important milestone in promoting judo not only as a sport, but also as an educational tool for university students across the country.

Judo as an Educational Pathway

The initiative reflects the increasing recognition of judo’s broader value within education. Beyond physical training, judo is widely regarded as a discipline that supports personal growth, fostering qualities such as discipline, leadership, resilience and mutual respect. These principles are seen as essential both in sport and in everyday life, reinforcing judo’s role as a formative educational practice.

Programme Development in Universities

Under the framework of the agreement, the involved parties will collaborate on introducing and expanding judo programmes within higher education institutions under the supervision of Kazakhstan’s Ministry for Science and Higher Education.

The aim is to provide students with greater access to judo while integrating its educational principles into university life. This includes creating structured opportunities for participation and development through both practical training and academic engagement.

The Ministry and the Jenys International Sports Foundation plan to support the establishment of dedicated university structures and coordinators, the development of coaching education, and the integration of both theoretical and practical judo instruction. In addition, they will assist in organising university-level judo competitions and related sporting events.

Role of the International Judo Federation

The IJF will contribute by providing methodological guidance, supporting coach education, assisting in the organisation of training camps and competitions, and helping develop infrastructure and equipment. The federation will also support initiatives aimed at identifying and nurturing future high-performance athletes.

Statement from the IJF President

IJF President Mr Marius Vizer welcomed the agreement and emphasised the educational philosophy behind judo:

“Education has always been at the heart of judo. Jigoro Kano created judo not only as a sport but as a means of developing better individuals and stronger communities. By bringing judo closer to students and universities, we are investing in future generations and providing young people with valuable tools that will benefit them throughout their lives. We are proud to work alongside the Ministry for Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan and the Jenys International Sports Foundation on this important initiative.”

Broader Cooperation and Future Development

The partnership is expected to take shape through seminars, workshops, training camps, competitions and educational programmes. It also establishes a foundation for future projects and expanded collaboration as the initiative develops over time.

Kazakhstan has already established itself as one of the leading nations in global judo development, consistently investing in the growth of the sport at all levels. This agreement extends that commitment into the academic sphere, strengthening the connection between sport and education.

Through this initiative, the IJF reinforces its belief that judo is more than competition alone. It is a powerful educational tool capable of shaping students physically, intellectually and socially, while helping prepare them to become responsible citizens and future leaders.
